Roman W. Ulman is a native of Detroit, Michigan.  After graduating from Wayne State University with a BA in Political Science, Roman worked with the City of Detroit Department of Lighting, ultimately rising to the position of commission administrative coordinator and acting deputy director.

Roman has been very active in the labor movement, serving on the executive board of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal  Employees in Detroit, President of AFSCME local 1329, and as a member of the executive board of the AFL-CIO in Detroit.   Roman served as the executive director and lobbyist for AFSCME Arizona.  He has over 50 years of experience in labor-management relations.

In addition to his experience in the labor movement, Roman has been very active in Democratic Party politics in Michigan and Arizona.  He was a Michigan State Democratic Party Officer for 22 years and a delegate to the 1980 Democratic Party Presidential Convention.  Roman has been active in Democratic Party politics in Arizona since 1993, starting with the District 21 Democratic Organization.  He is currently a delegate of the Arizona State Democratic Party and was  the Parliamentarian.  Roman is also the chair of the Arizona State Democratic Party Labor Caucus and was the chair of the East Valley Democratic Party Breakfast Club.

For the past 52 years, Roman has been married to his wife Irene.  They have 4 children and 11 grand children
